COUPLES & RELATIONSHIP THERAPY
Couples Therapy in California
Find your way back to each other.
LGBTQIA+ affirming, relational couples therapy for communication, conflict, intimacy, trust, and deeper connection.
WHEN RELATIONSHIPS FEEL HARD
When Your Relationship Starts to Feel Harder Than It Used To
You can love each other deeply and still feel stuck.
Maybe conversations turn into arguments before either of you feels heard. You keep circling the same issues without resolving them. You feel more like roommates than partners. Or there’s still love between you, but the closeness that once came naturally feels harder to find.
Couples therapy creates space to slow things down, understand what’s happening underneath the conflict, and begin relating to one another differently.
Couples often come to therapy for:
Communication that keeps breaking down
Recurring arguments and unresolved conflict
Emotional disconnection
Sex and intimacy concerns
Trust and relationship insecurity
Different needs or expectations
Family-of-origin patterns
Parenting and family stress
Major life transitions
Feeling more like roommates than partners
You don’t have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to ask for support.
COUPLES COUNSELING
How Couples Therapy Can Help
Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who is right or wrong. It’s about understanding what happens between you.
Together, we can identify the patterns that tend to take over during difficult moments, explore what each partner is experiencing underneath those reactions, and practice new ways of communicating and connecting.
Couples counseling can help you:
Communicate more openly
Learn to express what you need while making space to understand your partner.
Navigate conflict differently
Recognize recurring cycles and find ways to move through disagreements without becoming trapped in the same fight.
Strengthen emotional connection
Create more room for vulnerability, affection, understanding and closeness.
Explore intimacy and trust
Talk about difficult or sensitive parts of your relationship in a supportive environment.
Understand your relationship patterns
Explore how past relationships, family experiences and learned ways of protecting yourself may be showing up between you now.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every disagreement. It’s to help you understand one another- and your relationship- more clearly.
OUR APPROACH
A Relational Approach to Couples Therapy
Relationships don’t exist in a vacuum.
How we communicate, respond to conflict, seek closeness and protect ourselves can be shaped by experiences that began long before our current relationship.
At Alison Hunter Therapy, couples counseling looks beyond the argument happening today to understand the patterns underneath it.
We approach couples therapy collaboratively and without assigning one partner the role of “the problem.” Instead, therapy creates space to become curious about the relationship itself- what happens when one of you feels hurt, disconnected, afraid or misunderstood, and what each of you may need in those moments.
With greater awareness comes the possibility of choosing something different.
