PARENTING & FAMILY SUPPORT
Parenting Support in California
Parent with more connection- and less second-guessing.
Therapy and support for parents navigating behavior, communication, boundaries, family stress, and changing relationships with their children.
WHEN PARENTING FEELS HARD
Why Does Parenting Feel So Hard Right Now?
You love your child.
And sometimes you have absolutely no idea what to do with what is happening.
Maybe every request turns into a negotiation. Your child’s emotions feel enormous. Your teenager barely talks to you anymore. You set a boundary and immediately wonder whether you were too strict… or not strict enough.
Perhaps you’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, tried different strategies, and somehow still find yourself thinking:
What am I supposed to do here?
Parenting support gives you a place to step outside of the immediate problem and understand what may be happening underneath it — for your child and for you.
Because parenting isn’t only about managing behavior.
It’s about building a relationship while raising a human being who is constantly changing
PARENT-CHILD CONNECTION
How Do I Set Boundaries Without Damaging Our Relationship?
This is a question many thoughtful parents wrestle with.
You want your child to feel heard.
You also need to be their parent.
Healthy connection doesn’t require saying yes to everything, avoiding consequences or making sure your child is never upset with you.
Children and teenagers can dislike a boundary and still feel deeply loved.
Parenting support can help you find ways to hold limits while staying connected- communicating clearly, making room for your child’s feelings and recognizing when a situation calls for empathy, structure, flexibility or follow-through.
The goal isn’t permissive parenting or perfect parenting.
It’s becoming more intentional about how you respond when parenting gets difficult.
WHAT PARENTS CAN WORK TOWARD
Parenting With More Confidence & Connection
Parenting support isn’t about giving you a script for every difficult moment.
No strategy works perfectly with every child, every family or every situation.
Instead, therapy can help you develop a stronger understanding of your child and greater confidence in yourself as a parent.
You may work toward:
Understanding what drives challenging behavior
Responding more calmly during difficult moments
Setting clearer and more consistent boundaries
Reducing recurring parent-child power struggles
Communicating in ways your child can hear
Supporting emotional regulation
Navigating your child’s growing independence
Understanding your own parenting triggers
Breaking unwanted generational patterns
Strengthening connection after conflict
Working more collaboratively with a co-parent
Feeling less consumed by parenting guilt and second-guessing
The goal isn’t to become a perfect parent.
It’s to feel more grounded in the parent you want to be.

Frequently Asked Questions About Parenting Support
-
You don’t need to be in crisis or feel completely overwhelmed to benefit from parenting support. It may be helpful if you’re repeatedly struggling with behavior, communication, boundaries, parent-child conflict, different parenting styles or simply feeling unsure about how to respond to your child. Parenting support can also be useful during developmental changes or family transitions.
-
Sometimes, yes. Working directly with parents can be useful because changing the way adults understand and respond to a recurring interaction can shift the pattern around it. Whether parent-only support, individual therapy for your child or family therapy makes the most sense depends on your child’s age, the concern and your family’s circumstances.
-
Boundaries can still create frustration, especially as children become more independent. Parenting support can help you look at how expectations are communicated, what tends to escalate conflict, whether boundaries are developmentally appropriate and how you respond when your child pushes back. The goal isn’t necessarily to make your child happy about every limit, but to make boundaries clearer and conflict more manageable.
-
Some changes in mood, privacy, independence and relationships are expected during adolescence. More significant or persistent changes in mood, functioning, sleep, school performance, friendships or behavior may deserve closer attention. If you’re concerned, a therapist can help you think through what you’re noticing and whether individual child or teen therapy, parenting support or family therapy may be appropriate.
-
Yes. Alison Hunter Therapy offers online parenting support for parents and caregivers throughout California.
