FAMILY & RELATIONSHIP THERAPY
Family Therapy in California
Find a different way forward- together.
Relational family therapy for communication, conflict, connection, transitions, and patterns affecting the whole family.
WHEN THE WHOLE FAMILY FEELS IT
When Something in Your Family Isn’t Working Anymore
Families are interconnected.
When one person is struggling, relationships change. When communication breaks down between two people, tension can ripple through the entire household. And when a family goes through a major transition, everyone may respond to that change differently.
Maybe conversations turn into arguments almost immediately. Your child or teenager has become more withdrawn. Parents disagree about how to handle something. Siblings are constantly in conflict. Or everyone seems tense, but nobody quite knows how to talk about what’s happening.
Sometimes the problem isn’t one person.
Sometimes the family needs a place to understand what is happening between everyone.
Family therapy creates space to slow down those dynamics, understand each person’s experience, and begin building healthier ways of communicating and relating.
FAMILY DYNAMICS
Why Does My Family Keep Having the Same Conflicts?
Families develop patterns.
One person gets upset. Another becomes defensive. Someone tries to fix everything. Someone else withdraws. A parent becomes frustrated, a child escalates, and suddenly everyone is participating in a cycle nobody intended to create.
Over time, these roles can become so familiar that the family begins repeating them automatically.
Family therapy helps make those patterns visible.
Rather than focusing only on the latest argument, therapy can explore what tends to happen before, during and after difficult moments- and what each family member may actually be needing underneath their reaction.
Once a family can recognize the cycle, there is more room to respond differently.
OUR APPROACH
Family Therapy That Doesn’t Make One Person the Problem
It’s common for families to begin therapy because one person seems to be struggling the most.
Maybe a child is acting out. A teenager is withdrawing. A parent feels overwhelmed. Or one relationship within the family has become particularly tense.
That person may absolutely need support.
But at Alison Hunter Therapy, family counseling also considers the larger relational context around what is happening.
How does the family communicate when someone is upset? What happens during conflict? What roles has each person taken on? What expectations exist within the family? How have past experiences or major changes shaped the way everyone relates now?
The goal is not to decide who is right.
It is to understand the family more fully and create space for each person’s experience to matter.

If your family feels stuck in patterns you haven’t been able to change on your own, counseling can provide another way to understand what is happening.
-
Not always. Who attends family therapy depends on what your family is experiencing and what your therapist believes will be most useful. Sessions may include the entire family, parents or caregivers, a parent and child, siblings, or different combinations of family members at different points in therapy.
-
